Yamaha R3 Imported To India for R&D- Launch in 2015?
Big news indeed! Yamaha has imported two units of their 320cc , twin cylinder motorcycle- The Yamaha R3 to the country for research and development purposes. This news comes as a bit of a surprise, as almost everyone had thought that the R25 will be reaching India instead of the R3 , which was claimed to be tailor made for the more developed markets like United states.
Yamaha India is bang on with this move ,as almost the whole of that country were begging for the R3 instead of its less powerful sibling. Now the only thing that is standing in our way of getting the bike is its pricing , and the launch obviously.
Both the bikes have been imported to India from Indonesia at Rs 1.88 lakhs, which is another good news. This means that on Indian launch, the Yamaha R3 could be priced just under the 3 lakh price range.’Mouth watering’ , for a high revving 320cc parallel twin cylinder motorcycle capable of producing 42PS of power and 30Nm of torque.
In case you don’t know , The Yamaha R25 has a 249cc parallel twin cylinder mill that can produce 38Ps of power and 22Nm of torque. The power figures of the Yamaha R3 are more similar to the KTM RC390 , which as you know has single cylinder mill. This along with the better acceleration,top-speed and engine refinement ,makes the higher prices of the Yamaha justifiable.
The Yamaha R3 is likely to be brought to India via the CKD route and optional ABS should be on offer.
With the launch of the Yamaha R3 , KTM will soon see some of their customers slipping away.Yamaha enjoys a very loyal fan base in India , surely much more than KTM, who are only here since 2012 .But at the current prices , both Yamaha and KTM should enjoy comfortable sales in the country.
So somebody has to lose in the segment, right? That somebody will be ‘Kawasaki’ whose Ninja300 and Z250 will suffer miserably in sales.
All the Yamaha R15 owners can now have a heavy sigh of relief!
*The entire article is based in the conjecture that the Yamaha R3 will be priced below 3 lakhs.
