Maruti Suzuki has finally launched what is India’s most fuel efficient car- The 2015 Celerio DDIS 125. Though the design has remained mostly untouched, what has caught our attention is the Suzuki built 793cc two pot diesel mill, which is the smallest ever in the country to pull a passenger car. The engine has been in development for over 4 years now, at Suzuki’s Japan headquarters. Prices starts at Rs. 4.65 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
2015 Maruti Celerio Diesel (Prices ex-showroom, Delhi) –
- Celerio LDi – Rs. 4,65,393/-
- Celerio VDi – Rs. 4,95,414/-
- Celerio ZDi – Rs. 5,25,442/-
- Celerio ZDi (O) – Rs. 5,71,484/-
The new 0.8L 2 cylinder diesel mill is capable of producing 47 PS of power at 3500 rpm and 125 NM of torque at 2000rpm (which is indicated by the badging). The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox.Automated Manual transmission(AMT) isn’t provided even as optional, but could be provided later on. Fuel delivery and injection is managed by an all new Bosch engine management system.
The Maruti Celerio diesel carries over most features from its petrol sibling, which includes electric ORVMs, integrated audio with Bluetooth, steering mounted controls, keyless entry, and is available in 6 shades. Safety features like ABS, EBD and dual front airbags are provided but only in the top Z (O) trim.
The ARAI certified fuel efficiency figures are 27.62 kmpl, which though less than expected is impressive nonetheless.
The Maruti Celerio diesel will compete with cars like the Hyundai i10, Ford Figo and Chevrolet beat in the entry level diesel hatch segment. The Celerio though underpowered has the advantage of efficiency and price, along with the brand name backing it up.
