Volkwagen Ameo compact sedan was officially unveiled in India on 2nd of February, 2016. The automaker has now showcased the car here at the 2016 Auto Expo, Delhi. This is VW’s first attempt in the popular segment , and it was only right that the ‘for India’ car be ‘made in India’.
From the front, the design is typical Volkswagen, and gets swept back headlamps and wide horizontal grille slats. The sides, like the front also share similarities with the Polo. The proportionality of the car seems to be somewhat lost at the rear, as is the case with most cars in the segment. The rear share similarities with the Vento. The Ameo is built on the PQ25 platform, and shares wheelbase with the polo.
The interior feature list has been carried over from the Polo, and the car gets touchscreen multimedia infotainment system- with mirror link, SMS viewer, Bluetooth connectivity and voice control, electric ORVM, rear view camera with sensors, rear ac vents, front arm rest, lane change indicator and a chilled glovebox. Safety features like ABS, EBD and dual front airbags are provided as standard. Rain sensing wipers and cruise control are also provided. Volkswagen has promised class leading build quality and drivability, something which the manufacturer has lived up to over the years.
Powering the Volkswagen Ameo is three mills, all currently doing duty on the Polo. This include a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol unit delivering 74bhp of power and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine producing 89bhp of power, both mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The other unit is a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol TSi engine with the 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox, producing 103 bhp and 250 Nm.
The Volkswagen Ameo will compete with the Maruti Suzuki dZire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xent, Tata Kite 5 and the likes. The car is expected to be launched by august 2015, and will be priced competitively between the Polo and Vento.
