The upcoming Toyota Calya mini-MPV will be launched in the Indonesian market at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The event will be held between 11th and 21st August in Jakarta. However prior to the premier, dealerships have already started bookings and some cars even reached the showroom floor.

 Toyota Calya exterior and interior

The exterior features familiar Toyota design, but isn’t exactly the most proportional vehicle around. The car is a mini MPV having dimensions 4,070 mm length, 1,655 mm width and 1,600 mm height, with a wheelbase of 2,525 mm. The ground clearance is 180 mm.

The front fascia gets a huge hexagonal grille. The Toyota logo sits on a chrome bar which connects the headlamps, which isn’t available on the lower trims. The round foglamps are placed on their own compartment on the sides of the bumper.

The sides get typical MPV-ish details, while the rear comes with Innova Crysta inspired taillamps, spoiler and chrome garnish above the number plate area.

On the inside, the floating dual tone ‘beige-black’ dashboard does look a bit cluttered. The gear shift is mounted atop the console and is in immediate vicinity of the HVAC controls. The steering wheel is a simple 3-spoke unit and information dials and small MID unit can be seen.

Toyota Calya features

The Toyota Calya is only available with a 1.2-litre ‘3NR-FE ‘ four-cylinder petrol mill that delivers 88 PS (87.76 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 108 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a 4-speed automatic available as optional equipment.

Toyota Calya launch in India?

At the moment, the Toyota Calya will only be available in the Indonesian market. With the diesel ban (for cars above 2000cc) looming over their most popular cars like Innova, the Japanese manufacturer might think of smaller/detuned models soon. Also Toyota doesn’t have a MPV or SUV in the lower segment, a spot which can be filled up with the Calya.

Don’t expect Toyota to launch their Calya in India any time soon. If at all they decide, a sub-4m update on 2018 Calya might suffice.
