KTM 390 Adventure to debut in 2019

We’ve got confirmation that KTM will be launching an entry level adventure motorcycle based on their 390 platform. While this is certainly good news, we were disappointed to know that its launch will not take place before 2019.

Since KTM already has a proven 390 platform, why is it that they are taking so long to bring an adventure derivative? Read on for the answer.

#1: They don’t want a botched up adventure.

KTM 390 Adventure India

Though KTM in recent times have found popularity in naked and sportsbike segment, the company has its roots in the adventure space. It is what they are most famous for and their 2017 adventure range (1090 Adv & 1290 Adv) proves once again why this is.

For a company with such prolific adventure background, they aren’t taking any risks. They’ve already made prototypes based on the Duke 390, with longer suspension travel, but problems like increased rider seat height, not much change in ground clearance etc hindered further progress.

So they have now decided to build a thorough 390cc off-roader, which will be significantly different from its Duke sibling. This is the main reason for the bike’s 2019 launch date.

#2 Timeline and model congestion

KTM has always taken time with their models. The Duke 390 and RC 390 has had 1 year between them, and so will the Adventure 390.

The new KTM Duke 390 will debut early next year, while the next generation RC390 will debut by late 2017/early 2018. This will ensure enough time for the new Duke 390 to get strong foothold in the market. Similarly, the KTM 390 Adventure will also take its time.

Even though all the bikes are in different segment, their prices in markets like India will be close enough to cause confusion for potential buyers. By adopting the above method, all three motorcycles will enjoy comfortable sales in the segment, with a new model coming in to keep their line-up fresh.
