Two new smaller displacement Yamaha motorcycles have been spotted testing in Delhi roads. They share many ‘MT’ family traits and as far as we can make out, seem to be an all new MT-15 developed for India. It is unlikely that these are FZ V3 models (even with slight similarities), so don’t get those hopes up.
Talking about its design, the new Yamaha MT 15 is not as aggressive or forward leaning as the MT-15 (M Slaz) that is available in global markets. In fact, the bike is much closer to the MT-03 in this aspect. Front gets a very simple single headlamp setup, while the sides come fit with larger (compared to MT-03) scoop guide, tank cover and newly designed tail piece. Its alloy wheels are similar to that on the MT-15.
The bike’s exhaust is short and chubby, and Indian safety features like rear tyre hugger and saree guard can be seen. Rear taillights are more like that of the M-Slaz. Other features include telescopic front forks, rear monoshock, and front and rear disc brakes.
You can see that a single cylinder mill is powering this particular bike. Further, it is only right to expect an updated 149.8cc engine, which will also be seen on the Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 . It will be more powerful and efficient than the current unit (that produces 16.8 bhp at 8500 rpm, 15 Nm available at 7500 rpm).
If this is indeed the new MT-15, it will form the base for the upcoming Yamaha R15 V3. So they may share design, features and even the chubby exhaust! on launch, which is likely in early 2017.
More details are expected to come out soon. Stay tuned.
