New Yamaha R15 V3 spied in India
The Yamaha R15 V3 has finally debuted in Indonesia. The bike, which is in its 3rd generation, has been completely restyled so as to be in tune with Yamaha’s latest design philosophy. Also, much like most of its bigger siblings it is feature loaded.
The Yamaha R15 is an immensely popular sportsbike in India which was launched in 2008. While the first generation bike was an equal mix of sport and comfort, the 2nd generation Yamaha YZF R15 V2 sacrificed some of that comfort for a whole lot of aggressive design. Now both bikes are available in the market (former being called R15S), but is in need of an update due to increasing local competition.
Over the last 5 years we’ve seen many colour schemes being implemented on the R15, which has kept it fresh. Even now the bike sells in satisfactory numbers, while chief competition like Honda CBr150r and Bajaj RS200 are seen to be slipping. So the upcoming update is a way to keep up with times and in expectation of future competition.
Unlike Honda, Yamaha is very prompt in bringing new bikes to India. The twin headlamp version of the Honda CBR150R has been around for quite some time now globally, but it is still unavailable in our country. Even now the Japanese manufacturer refuses to give a clear launch plan and that too for a bike that is capable of draining Yamaha’s sales in the segment.
Yamaha YZF R15 V3 India testing begins – Spied
The new Yamaha R15 V3 has been spied testing in India without camouflage. It seems to be on a routine pre-launch test, and could debut next year at the 2018 Auto Expo, Delhi.
Though design looks similar to the international variant, some features like slipper clutch might be given a miss. Also, some equipment might be sourced from the R15 V2 to keep costs down (see front fender and forks).
Yamaha YZF R15 V3 begins to reach dealerships?
We’ve stumbled upon some pictures of the Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 (shown above) in Social Media claiming to be from a dealership in Hyderabad. We couldn’t confirm whether they are real but, since Yamaha has plans to launch the V3 in India, we are staring at the inevitable here.
The bikes seen here are in matte red colour but all three colours (including black and blue) should reach the country.
Confirmed: These pictures are not from India
Yamaha YZF R15 V3 – Design has improved
The Yamaha R15 introduced India to the world of ‘real’ affordable sportsbikes and was a huge success in the initial years of its launch. The V2 was introduced to boost its sales (which it achieved effortlessly) and can be seen the first true R-bred Yamaha to be launched in India’s budget space. Following them is the recently unveiled V3 (called in Indonesia just as R15 2017), which undoubtedly sets a new benchmark for the 150cc or even the entry-level sports bike space.
With Yamaha’s ‘R’ series taking a new design direction in the last two years, similar changes were for long expected in the new R15 as well. The new R15 v3 is most similar to the 2017 YZF-R6, both of which got prominent changes in the front fascia. Its large twin headlamps are replaced by sleeker units and are placed on either side of a big central vent. Other changes include new side faring, fully digital instrument cluster, larger LED taillights and restyled, more comfortable looking seats. The bikes continues to be based on the Deltabox frame which we all love dearly.
The R15 V3 is available in 3 colours- Racing Blue, Matte Black and Matte
Yamaha R15 V3 – Lots of Power with better delivery, more efficiency
The R15 V gets a new 155cc engine that produces 19.04 bhp @ 10000 rpm and 14.7 NM @ 8500 rpm. This makes it the most powerful 150cc bike currently available in the market, miles ahead of the latest version of CBR150R. The engine is mated to a 6-speed transmission.
Another interesting feature of this engine is the addition of Variable Valve timing which helps in providing better low end torque and higher end power by regulating fuel combustion at different throttle positions. It also improves the fuel efficiency and power delivery.
Yamaha YZF R15 V3- Better/more features
Apart from improving the already existing features by providing bigger disc brakes, LED lights and advanced digital instrument console, the Japanese manufacture has also provided more features. These include USD front forks, slipper clutch and expected optional ABS.
Yamaha R15 V3 launch and price

|Expected price||Rs. 1.3 Lakhs|
|Expected launch date||Late 2017/ 2018|

Update 29/12/2016- Finally! front fascia revealed.
The Upcoming Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 has finally shown its face to a photographer. Like its previous generations, the bike takes some of its ‘R’ DNA from the YZF-R6 (Its 2017 version) and obviously looks really good.
While the bike’s sides and rear (as shown below) get evolutionary design changes, its front is completely new. Sleek, twin LED headlamps can be seen with pilot lamps on its edges. Other changes include large centrally place aero addition, wider windsceen, new rear view mirrors, restyled front mudguard and sleek indicators.
-If you are confused because of some earlier images that claimed to be of the R15 V3, you should read this (they were fake).
Update: Finally! some real spy shots come out: Much clearer pictures of the 2017 Yamaha R15 facelift has come out. The images show slightly updated design and more features.
According to source IWB, new features like USD front forks, digital instrument cluster and a slightly updated front fascia is provided but it doesn’t share design with the R25/R3. From what ever Indonesian we could make out, deltabox frame and swingarm have not changed.
Since a production version of the Yamaha R15 V3 has not been spotted on roads yet, it is still unclear how the bike will look. However, we’ve now got more details on what’s under the fairing.
According to a report by MotoSaigon, the Yamaha BG6 (R15 V3 codename) will come with a new 155 cc, SOHC, single cylinder mill with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). VVA adds flexibility to valve train and helps in returning sharper throttle response. It was earlier confirmed that power and torque figures will be increased on the version 3. and it could possibly push very near the Suzuki GSX-R150’s figures.
The Yamaha R15 V2 is already a very aggressive looking sportsbike and we are not expecting any drastic changes on the version 3 (as with V1-V2). The recent spy shots also seem to tell a similar story. What we will get is new features and bump up in power.
Most of the new features of the Yamaha YZF R15 V3 will be lifted from the M-Slaz naked streetfighter. These include USD forks, LED headlamps and fully digital instrument console with full negative display & LED backlit. The Deltabox frame will remain but should get minor tweaks.
Powering the bike will be the same 150cc, single cylinder SOHC mill doing duty on the current gen bike, but will be tuned higher. But unfortunately nothing above 20bhp is expected. Transmission duties will be done by a 6-speed gearbox.
