2019 Mercedes Benz CLS Mild-hybrid revealed
The all-new 2019 Mercedes CLS has been revealed at the ongoing LA Auto Show. This ends the car’s extensive spy and teaser campaign and we can finally look at what’s really going on under the shiny new body. It can be seen as combination of E-Class and S-Class, inclined more to the former. There are even some aspects that the CLS excels over the E-Class, said Mercedes.

2019 Mercedes Benz CLS design- Exterior & Interior
Mercedes is taking a completely different route from most manufacturers in the segment. If lines and creases are all the rave now, the Stuttgarter feels that the premiumness of polished lines and smoother curves are the way to go in the future. The Mercedes Concept-A was an impressive predecessor to the new design language and the CLS can be seen as a proper beginning.
Design wise, we are mighty impressed. It is based on Mercedes’s MRA modular architecture and the new design has been rightly titled ‘Sensual Purity’. Though, what kind of naughtiness the seemingly modest body hides will have to be understood from a proper road test.
The front fascia is the most aggressive part of the car, and comes with a new design for the headlamps. The grille is wide and bumper is similar to those on Mercedes’ current line-up. They still call it a ‘4-door coupe’, characterised by slanting roofline and high belt line. The entire bodywork has been smoothed out, and it definitely has unique appeal.
The interior is very ‘Mercedes’ and gets dual 12.3-inch display dashboard and smart infotainment technology. There are some new details though, like the lights on the airvents that change colour depending on the temperature. The top-of-the-line S-Class steering can be seen, along with elegant upholstery and inch-perfect stitching. Another feature coming from the S-Class is the ‘Energizing Comfort system’ with six cabin presets, achieved by varying climate control, ambient lighting, audio system, massage seats, the audio playlist and even in-cabin fragrance.
There another exciting feature of the cabin is that it is a 5-seater. Apart from the bucket-seat mimicking outboard seats on the 2nd row, there is also a center seat with proper seat belts. The manufacturer stated that there was genuine interest for 5-seats, especially from markets like USA and China
2019 Mercedes Benz CLS design engine and transmission
Power for the Mercedes Benz CLS comes from a number of petrol and diesel engine options. In a first, some of these mills are complimented by a 48-volt EQ Boost mild hybrid system producing 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, mated to 1kWh battery system. This allow short but big burst of power during acceleration and can be used to smoothen-out the idling process. Also, absence of any belt-driven accessories means that the car can coast with engine turned off and that the air conditioning works independently.
One of the more popular variants (and pictured here)- the CLS450, gets a 3.0-litre, inline six-cylinder engine producing 367 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque (362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet). The smaller CLS350 is capable of 300 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. The top-of-the-line CLS53, coupled to electric motor, is capable of producing a massive 530 bhp of power.
Diesel variants are also available in Europe. These include 330d, 350d and 500 producing 231 ps, 290, 340 PS respectively. Unlike the petrol variants, some of the diesel ones will not come with mild-hybrid technology.
The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, sending power to all or rear wheels.
