The Honda CBR500r vs The KTM RC390

According to recent reports ,Honda will be bringing their middleweight sportsbike , The CBR500r to India by 2015.The comparisons and debates have already began , out of which one of them seemed to stands out- The Honda CBR500r vs The KTM RC390. Though they are miles apart in every aspect from looks to pricing , The Indian motorcyclists will surely find a way to bundle them in to the same category. So does the RC390 have any chance of beating the really tough competition , or will the CBR sail smoothly over the KTM ? Lets find out.

LOOKS AND DESIGN

The CBR500r borrows an all so familiar design of its bigger sibling , The CBR1000rr fireblade. The KTM RC390 on the other hand comes in a completely new design , which has never been used in any motorcycle till date. However comparing both the motorcycles solely based on looks , arguably the CBR500r is the one to take the crown.

The Honda CBR500r vs The KTM RC390

The KTM RC390 looks much more track focused than the Honda CBR , however the latter seems to be built keeping in mind both the tourers and the racers. The CBR500r has a slightly bigger wheelbase than the RC390 , and is obviously bigger than the KTM.

On looks alone, it’s a thumbs up for Honda . The only thing going against the Honda CBR500r, is that all the lower capacity CBR’s like the 2015 CBR150r & the CBR300r looks virtually identical to it.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The Honda CBR500r vs The KTM RC390 – Engine

There is almost 100cc difference between both the powertrains. The Honda CBR500r sports a 471cc parallel twin cylinder engine , while the KTM RC390 has a 373cc single cylinder one. This obviously means that the CBR500r will be much more refined than the KTM.The Bore and stroke for the CBR500r is 67mm and 66.8 mm , while for the KTM it is 89 and 60mm respectively. The Engines of both are mated with six-speed transmission .

As shown in the spec-sheet below , There is only a mere 4hp difference between the two bikes . The CBR500r produces 46hp of power and 43Nm of Torque , while the RC390 produces 42Hp of power and 35 Nm of torque.  This means that both the bikes should provide almost similar 0-100kmph times , however the top speed of the CBR500r is a higher than the KTM-at 185kmph.

But the above numbers are only viable as long as the bikes are on the tracks. When it comes to the longer rides in the highways, you will find that the CBR500r is more at home cruising along in 3-figure speeds.

ERGONOMICS , RIDEBILITY AND EQUIPMENTS

The Honda CBR500r vs The KTM RC390

It can be easily noticed that on longer rides it will be more comfortable to be on the Honda than the KTM( for both the pillion and the rider) . On the safety front , the Honda offers bigger brakes and larger tires than the KTM. However , The RC390 offer features like ABS and USD front forks as standard ,which is a sure plus point. The KTM excels in almost all safety features , and is on-par or even better than the CBR500r.

Both these motorcycles should provide almost the same efficiency figures. The Honda however carries a larger fuel tank with 15.5 liter capacity.

PRICE

At 2.10 Lakh (ex-showroom ,Delhi) , The KTM RC390 literally blasts off the CBR500r – which should be priced upwards of the 4 lakh range. The CBR should find potential competitors in the likes of the Kawasaki Ninja 300r , The Kawasaki ER-6n and for the lack of any other, The Harley Davidson Street 750.

Frankly, there is no competing with the KTM RC390 as of now. The CBR500 will be priced relatively lesser for a twin cylinder motorcycle in India at 4lakhs  and could be seen eating off the sales of the Ninja 300r and the likes in the segment.
