Though Benelli had been fairly aggressive in the Indian market, a segment which was missing in their portfolio was the smaller capacity fully faired one. That changed when the Benelli Tornado 302 was unveiled at the EICMA last year. Now the Italian manufacturer has showcased the bike at India’s very own auto expo( and should be named DSK Benelli Tornado 300 here).
The tornado 302, unlike most sportbikes in the segment, gets a single v-shaped twin headlamp setup, which looks quite big. The design is muscular and aggressive, and the bike shares many features with the DSK Benelli TNT300. However Benelli claims that the trellis frame is newly developed- and is slightly lighter. The bike maintains a distinct identity, and fairing has been perfectly positioned over the TNT 300, leaving no visible gaps. The fuel tank is chiseled, and the seating position is aggressive. The long wind shield should provide adequate protection.
Powering the Benelli Tornado 302 is a 300cc, parallel-twin cylinder liquid cooled mill, delivering 36PS at 12,000rpm and 27Nm of torque at 9000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6 speed transmission. Top speed is stated to be 170ph.
The bike will get USD front forks at front and mono shock at rear. ABS is provided as standard equipment.
With prices expected to be hovering at the 3 lakh range (ex-showroom, Delhi), the bike is not just cheaper but also better equipped than its chief competitors- Yamaha R3 and Kawasaki Ninja 300.
