Toyota at the 2017 Detroit show has previewed the new, thoroughly updated Camry. For the 8th generation of their popular car, Toyota not only wanted to provide an easily recognisable face (“identifiable from 200 yards”, in their own words) but also provide clear distinction between their base and top variants. They seem to have managed to achieve both of these and the final products are very exciting (Exciting? Yes Exciting! see for yourself).
2018 Toyota Camry Design and Variants- LE, XLE, SE and XSE
Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the 2018 Toyota Camry even in its base variant has been made more aggressive-being lower, wider and sleeker. The LE and SE variants are differentiated more prominently at the front. Both cars get sleeker headlamps with LED accents and narrow grille. However the lower valence on the LE trims is a large horizontal unit while a sportier blacked out mesh unit is present on the SE variants. This ‘Lexus’ style design provides the car a very intimidating look, something not seen on its earlier generations. The strong, muscular hood adds to the aura.
An elegant, flowy design can be seen at the sides along with new side skirts and boot spoiler. Its rear gets new taillight but is otherwise plain in the standard variants. However the SE trims get larger tires (19” black-finish ones on XSE), air diffuser and quad chrome-tip exhausts.
2018 Toyota Camry Interior and Safety
On the inside we are treated to an all-new asymmetrical dashboard, which is a departure from the typically bland ones on most of their cars. The front seats are now more comfortable and the use of high grade soft touch material on dashboard, centre console and door panels provide a premium feel.
Features like 7-inch multi-information display and 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Toyota’s Entune 3.0 are provided as standard. JBL premium audio system, 10-inch color head-up display and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are optional on the car. Notable absentees include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety features like pedestrian detection and pre-collision system, 10 airbags, cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist and auto high beams are standard. Higher variants get features like Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.
2018 Toyota Camry Power and Specs
Toyota says that the driver will experience dramatic improvements in drive quality and dynamics on the new Camry. Powering the car is a 3.5-litre V6 and a new 2.5-litre inline-4 petrol, both paired to a new 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission. The 2.5L unit also comes with Toyota Hybrid System (THS II) with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
