Ford Freestyle (Figo Cross) –What’s new?
The new Freestyle will fall in to an all too familiar crossover category, even though Ford rather call it India’s first CUV (Compact UV). The segment is not particularly innovative and usually has a number of repeating design elements. Nevertheless, almost every major manufacturer, including Hyundai, Toyota and Volkswagen, is a part of it.
The car gets a slightly revised front fascia with redesigned headlamps, grille and bumper. Its sides gain additional cladding as well as wider 185/60 R15 tyres. The rear also gets similar aggressive upgrades.
On the inside, the car’s center console is revised with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Ford’s Sync 3 with Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility comes as standard. Smartphone connectivity, voice assist and emergency assist are some major features.
The Ford Freestyle’s highlight will be its class-leading 1.2 liter-3 cylinder ‘Dragon’ petrol engine, producing 95 Bhp of power and 115 Nm of peak torque. It will be mated to a smoother 5 speed manual gearbox from Getrag- replacing the IB5 unit.
A 1.5 liter TDCI diesel mill is also available which comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It is capable of producing 100 PS and 215 Nm.
The Active Rollover Prevention (ARP) is one of the highlights of this model. It allows the car to take steep bends at near-100 kmph speeds and that too with a roof load of up to 50 kilograms.
Ride quality and handling are things that Ford swears by. The Freestyle gets new steering and suspension set-up to further accentuate these qualities. It will compete with cars like the Hyundai i20 Active, Honda WR-V and Toyota Etios Cross.
