Subaru Forester is much better for 2019, gets Sport trim

Subaru Forester 2019

Subaru has revealed the Forester 2019 at the recently concluded New York International Auto show. This fifth generation compact SUV will compete with the likes of the 2019 Toyota RAV4 and the widely popular Honda CR-V, but compared to previous generations, there is lot more going for it now.

The new Forester doesn’t look much different from the outgoing model. This was to be expected as Subaru is not really known for their promptness in the design department. However, they have compensated it with a roomier interior and a boot load of new features.

Let’s talk about space first. The new Subaru Forester is based on their Global Platform architecture which is known to provide roomy interiors. All SUVs in the segment continue to push boundaries as far interior is concerned and Subaru now, even more so.

The Japanese manufacture says that the improved opening width of the cargo area (51.3 in wide) now allows a fully-sized golf bag to be loaded sideways without tilting. The expanded cargo area has gone up as well and at 76.1 cubic feet with rear seat folded, the Forester has successfully trumped the Honda CR-V.

Coming to features, Automatic climate control and a 6.5-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. An 8.0-inch one with optional navigation is provided on higher trims. Obviously top trims get even more, including features like 8-way power front passenger seat, 10-way power driver’s seat, heated steering and seats, and a standard electric bootlid.

Now coming to the really interesting stuff, ‘EyeSight’- a semi-autonomous system which incorporates emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning for advanced driver safety is provided as standard across trims. Further upgrading it on the touring trim is ‘DriverFocus safety technology’. This system automatically adjusts to presets of up to 5 drivers and can even pinpoint driver distractions and mood using facial recognition.

The Forester Sport

New Subaru Forester Sport 2019

For 2019, Subaru has added a new Sport model to the mix. Though changes are mostly cosmetics, features such as Sport Sharp drive mode and paddle shifts are worthy additions.

Design wise, the car looks sportier with ‘black’ being the general theme. There’s darkened grille, black alloy wheels, black body cladding and rear roof spoiler.

2019 comes with better specs too

Power for the new Forester 2019 comes from an updated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder flat engine producing 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This is 12 hp more and 2 lb-ft more than the current model. The engine is mated to a CVT transmission, sending power to all four wheels as standard.

Active Torque Vectoring is standard across the range and helps the SUV with better traction on a wide range of road conditions. Further improving the system is X-Mode system with hill-descent control for optimum grip on slippery surfaces. Additional Snow/Dirt, and Deep Snow/Mud modes come as part of new dual-mode X-Mode system on higher trims.

There you go! It obvious that the Forester has improved a lot for 2019 and with its new range of standard features, is an even more threat to the CR-V.
