UM DSR II & Hypersport coming to rival Hero Xpulse 200?

Upcoming Adventure bikes under 1.5 lakhs

Once a forte of commuters, India’s entry-level motorcycling segment is beginning to show signs of change. If it was semi-faired, naked and erstwhile sports bikes that started the shift, now the baton has been passed to Tourers, Cruisers and top-notch Adventures. Royal Enfield introduced their Himalayan, Bajaj-the Dominar, and host of other manufacturers including BMW (G 310 GS) and KTM (390 Adventure) are set to bring their version out soon.

The problem is that all these motorcycles are still priced at a premium and not accessible to the general folk. Thankfully, manufacturers like Hero and UM have something to say about this!

Hero Xpulse 200

We first saw the Xpulse at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Now, Hero seems to have finally set a launch date and even released some official images of the bike. They have learned a lot from the debacle of the Hero Impulse and the Xpulse looks like a much better prospect! Its not a mere semi-fairing and longer windscreen on the Xtreme 200S, simply speaking- not a Bajaj 200AS.

The Hero Xpulse has everything in it to be a proper Adventure. It has long travel suspension, large windscreen, long front beak, engine guard, spoke wheels and even an upswept exhaust. Tires are dual purpose with grippy knobs to perform well in off-road conditions. Best thing is that it won’t cost a bomb and is likely to be priced near Rs. 1.10 lakhs. A pretty good number, considering it nearest real competitor- the Himalayan starts at  Rs 1.68 lakhs.

So what is the UM DSR II and Hypersport?

Well, UM has been contemplating entering other segments in the Indian market. Two of their bikes, the UM Hypersport and the DSR II were recently imported to the country for researching audience interest. While the Hypersport has been spotted a number of times before, this is the first time we are seeing the latter. Hopefully, bikes such as the BMW G 310 GS has piqued UM’s interest.

Let’s start with the DSR II. It looks similar to the Xpulse 200 and purely based on aesthetics, have everything, if not slightly more than what Hero has. It also has a range of engine options from a 125cc to 223cc, the latter capable of producing maximum of 16 bhp (which is close to the Xpulse).

The UM Hypersport is a dual-sport and if nothing else, looks similar to the G 310 GS. However engine-wise, its biggest, 223 cc mill is only good for 16 bhp, making it closer to the Xpulse in that aspect.

We are not certain which of the two models UM plan to introduce in India but official confirmation is likely to happen by end of this year. Who knows, they might even launch both!
