2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs Ford F-150 vs 2019 Ram 1500

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs Ford F-150 vs 2019 Ram 1500

The 2018 Detroit Motor show witnessed a number of new trucks and cars being revealed. Among them were two very popular Detroit pullers- 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and 2019 Ram 1500. They, along with the recently refreshed F-150, should make for a very competitive full-size pickup space in 2019. The F-150 also addressed its lack of diesel engine with a 250hp Powerstroke 3.0-liter this year.

All the three trucks are lighter and better equipped, and the gap between them has definitely narrowed. This should mean more heat on the F-150 but addition of the diesel variant is bad news of the other two as well.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs Ford F-150 vs 2019 Ram 1500- Design and Cargo Area

The 2019 Chevy Silverado and Ram 1500 both receive a redesigned front fascia. The Ford F-150 got a thorough update in 2018.

Both Chevy and Ford take a modern approach in their design and the former even replaced their signature square wheel arches with round ones. In comparison, the Ram 1500 retains its classic look and feels more authentic.

Design is subjective and based solely on this factor, you can’t go wrong with either one of the three. We do lean slightly to the Silverado though.

A highlight of all three models is that they have shed a lot of weight. This is mostly due to the use of Aluminum and light-weight steel. The F-150 sheds the most at 732 pounds, followed by Silverado (450 pounds) and the Ram (225 pounds). However, since the former was heavier to start with, the comparative numbers should be close.

Cargo Area– Gone is the times when the Cargo Area was just a flat bet. Now, manufacturers are bringing as much innovation in to it as possible.

In earlier generations, the Ram 1500 had a clear one-up over the other two because of its lockable ‘Rambox’ storage on the bed sides. Now though, the 2019 Chevy Silverado has a similar lockable cargo area on its bed sides- just above the wheel arches, and seems to provide as much storage as the Rambox. Cargo boxes on the Silverado are removable and the truck can thus free up slightly more space to its sides. However, the Rambox is placed on the outer side and is more accessible.

In comparison, the Ford F-150 doesn’t have a lockable storage space at the back. Also, since Ram and Chevy have took the outside and inside of the bed sides, Ford is running out of places to ‘innovatively’ put the much-requested storage area.

The new Chevy Silverado’s bed is bigger, has lockable storage and even a power tailgate. This makes it our best pick, as far as cargo area is concerned.

Interior: For a brief time through 2017, Ford had the clear advantage in terms of interior quality. Now, the new models from Chevy and Ram have made up this deficit, perhaps providing even more.

All three cars are spacious and well-equipped. Their interior quality and comfort seem to be similar as well. However, they do have certain differences and unique qualities.

For me, the Ram 1500 has the best interior design. It looks premium and the 12-inch infotainment display on the higher trims is a treat for the eyes. The Silverado’s interior highlight is its efficient space utilization, and storage spaces are provided underneath the seat and even on the rear backrest.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs Ford F-150 vs 2019 Ram 1500- Engine & Transmission

While V8 engines are available on all the three models, only Chevy and Ram provides it as the top-of-the-line. The Ram 1500’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8 produces 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque but the Silverado’s  numbers isn’t confirmed yet. Its output could be similar to current model’s 420 hp and 460 lb-ft.

The F-150, on the other hand, comes with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 on its top trims that is capable of producing 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Ram and Ford’s lower trims are powered by V6 engines producing maximum of 305 hp (&269 lb-ft) and 325 hp (400 lb-ft) respectively. No small V6 has been announced for the Chevy yet, so the 5.3-liter V8 producing 355 hp (383 lb-ft) could continue with a slight changes.

Depending on the variant, the Ram 1500 comes with an optional 48V mild-hybrid technology that can provide instant torque lift of 90 or 130 lb-ft.

Another specialty of the 2019 line-up is that all three of these trucks get a diesel engine. However, only Ford has officially revealed the output of their new Power stroke 3.0-liter mill, and it produces 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Ram 1500 will continue with its 3.0-liter V6 while the Silverado gets a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel- claimed to be the best in the segment.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs Ford F-150 vs 2019 Ram 1500- Verdict

Each truck has something going for it but overall, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is our top pick. It has a good design, ergonomic interior, widest bed area with lockable storage space and some segment-first features. It also has the most capable engine line-up among the three.

The Ford F-150 is currently unrivaled in the segment but the refreshed competition could take away at least some of its sales.

We will just have to wait and see.
