Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed their refreshed G-Class at the 2018 Detroit Motorshow. The popular SUV was spotted testing at numerous places earlier.
The Geländewagen is an evergreen face in the German Manufacturer’s line-up. It has not changed much since the early days but the new updates are one of its biggest since the 90s.

2019 Mercedes G-Class (G Wagon)- Exterior and Interior
The G-Class has a very characteristic design that could only be made worse with any unnecessary cosmetic changes. So Mercedes has kept the noticeable exterior changes minimal. What you cant see, however, is that high- and ultra-high-strength steel, along with aluminum (hood, doors, and fenders) have been extensively used. This brings down its total weight by a good 375 lbs.
The SUV gets a slightly updated front and rear, as well as new set of alloy wheels. It has grown in size (wheelbase increased by 1.6-inch) and as a result, cabin has more space than ever.
|Dimension||Increase (when compared to last generation)|
While changes on its exterior are minimal, the interior takes a huge step forward in terms of design and comfort. Everything about it screams ‘premium’ and unlike previous generations, is even befitting of some of their sedans. Also, leg-, head- and shoulder room have improved.
Top-of-the-line G-Class variants get a large digital display, extending all the way from the back of the steering to just over the center stack. The steering wheel is ripped straight from the E- and S-Class, and it gets multiple control buttons. The center console is neatly stacked as well.
2019 Mercedes G Wagon Engine, specification
Biggest change on the new G-Wagon is the addition of a newly developed independent front suspension. However the body-on-frame chassis, low-range gearing and three locking differential continue on to this generation.
The new suspension should improve its road-going prowess but as Mercedes claims, there won’t be any compromise when the SUV goes off-road. The German manufacturer has also ditched the recirculating ball steering setup for a more modern electromechanical rack-and-pinion system.
Apart from some of the existing engine options, a 282bhp, 2.9-litre straight six diesel engine joins the line-up for a base G350d model.
In USA, the same G550 model will continue with a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 producing 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet. It come mated to a new nine-speed automatic transmission.
The performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG G63 version comes with the same V8 mentioned above but it is tuned to produce a massive 603bhp.
2019 Mercedes G Wagon price and release date
The G-Class is in no way a cheap SUV. It cost over $100,000 in USA and this figure is unlikely to change. Mercedes is, however, rumored to be creating a smaller, GLB version of the G Wagon (they don’t look very similar though).
The new G-Wagon’s production will start later this year and the car will reach dealerships as a 2019 model.
The base G350d is not expected to come to USA but could be priced near £85,000 in UK.
