Five Ways To Prepare Your Car For The Winter

The weather might not be that frightful where you are but there is nothing wrong with having a certain time of the year to give your car the once over. For many people, this time of the year is just before the winter. So, now that Jack Frost is visiting other parts of the world, now is the time to sort your car out in case he comes to your part of the world early.

Check your tyres

If there is one thing that can cause a lot of accidents, it is your tyres not being fit for purpose. Having a tyres service check them over to ensure that they are ok and suitable for driving on could save your life. If your tyres get too bald, they can blow out and cause an accident. The last thing you need is a tyre to blow if it can be prevented. You might have to swap your tyres out with a special tyre that is designed for driving in colder weather or can be adapted to hold chains if it is really cold.

Check the coolant

The engine in your car can get hot very quickly which is why it is important to ensure that the fluid levels in the engine are topped up. It is important that you have coolant in your engine as this prevents the hot and cold temperatures of the weather from damaging the engine. If you use regular water, it will either freeze in the cold weather and expand in the engine, or it will boil away as you are driving your car. Neither one of these situations is ideal.

Oil levels

The oil in the engine is another important part that ensures that the car runs smoothly. From time to time, it might be necessary to change the oil in the car so that it continues to run properly. If you have no idea how to do this, you should speak to your local mechanic who can replace the oil for you.

Window wipers

During the winter, there is a good chance that you will meet a rainstorm or two. This is why you need to ensure that your window wipers are working properly. If they are old and the rubber is cracking, you should replace them before they come apart. If you don’t replace them regularly, around 6 to 12 months, you run the risk of your windsheet not being cleared properly.

A full service

There are plenty of things that can go wrong with a car, especially when you least expect it. So, this is why you should have your car serviced once a year. A lot of people don’t like to get their car serviced because it can be pricey and the mechanic will find issues that you didn’t know were there. As annoying as this can be, it is better to get these things sorted before they become a huge issue that costs you a lot of money down the road.
