While the Mahindra Thar is the most popular off-roader under 10 lakh, with its new updates the 2017 Force Gurkha has got a revival of sorts. The SUV has been updated to BS-IV compliance and gets minor cosmetic changes.
Here’s a small comparison of both the cars:
Force Gurkha 2017 vs Mahindra Thar – Price
The base Mahindra Thar model is cheaper than the new Force Gurkha by more than 1 lakh rupees. It’s still cheaper with option 4WD on board.

|2017 Force Gurkha Xpedition||Rs. 8.38 lakh|
|2017 Force Gurkha Explorer||Rs 9.36 lakh|

|Mahindra Thar CRDe 4WD||Rs 8.85 lakh|
Force Gurkha 2017 vs Mahindra Thar – Exterior
The Mahindra Thar has a very familiar, lovable design but the Force Gurkha is definitely more imposing. It takes obvious inspirations from the Mercedes G Wagon and has segment exclusive features like a hardtop, 5-doors and a high rise snorkel intake (with best in class water wading capability).
Overall exterior quality and finesse feel better on the Mahindra Thar. The Gurkha, however, benefits from a number of standard customizations. While its base Xpedition trim is only available as a 5-door, hardtop, the top explorer trim is available as either a 3-door or 5-door, with a soft top option available on the former. The interior seating arrangement can also be selected as per customer’s wish.
|Dimensions||Force Gurkha||Mahindra Thar|
|Wheelbase||2400 mm||2430 mm|
|Length||3992 mm||3920 mm|
|Width||1790 mm||1726 mm|
|Height||2055 mm||1930 mm|
|Ground Clearance||205 mm||200 mm|
Force Gurkha 2017 vs Mahindra Thar- Interior
Interior of either of these two SUVs is nothing to write home about. However, in comparison, the Thar is better (in the CRDe variant) with pod type instrument cluster, better steering wheel and circular air con vents (on the top model). The new Gurkha gets updated 4-spoke steering wheel, new AC knobs, and better plastic, but it still feels outdated.
It may not look it but the Mahindra Thar also has 30mm more wheelbase and 100 liter more boot space (600L).
Force Gurkha 2017 vs Mahindra Thar- Engine
Powering the Force Gurkha is a 2.6-litre diesel engine producing 85 bhp and 230 Nm. The Thar CRDe gets a more powerful 2.5-litre TCI- CRDe engine that is capable of 105 bhp and 247 Nm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
The base trim of the Mahindra Thar is however only capable of producing 63bhp and 182.5Nm.
