After tremendous success of the Jeep brand in India, Fiat Chrysler is looking at ways to further increase sales in the sub-continent. They want to bring two new cars Jeep cars- a sub-4m and 3-row midsize, the former being one of the fastest moving SUV segment. So unlike previously thought, the Renegade wont be available at a huge bargain instead, an all new Jeep compact SUV will be made for India.
Jeep’s new Sub-4m
Jeep’s new compact will most likely ride on the next-gen Fiat Panda Platform and should come exclusively with a petrol engine option. Production will take place at Jeep’s Ranjangaon plant (India) as well as the Pomigliano plant in Italy.
The new SUV will be priced head-on with the Brezza, creating tough competition for the latter. It is all set to be launched in 2020.
FCA India MD Kevin Flynn, in an interview with Business Standard said:
“That (Jeep Compass Trailhawk) will be followed by the sub-4 metre SUV, which will be around the size of the Ford EcoSport and Maruti Brezza, in 2020,”
|Price in India||Rs. 9.35 lakhs|
Why no diesel?
Jeep is slowly discontinuing their diesel options in Europe, a process which they hope to complete by 2021. With no diesel being produced for Europe and use for their (non-BSVI) 1.3-litre MultiJet obsolete, its not economical to make a new diesel for just one market. They might hop on the hybrid bandwagon but that is likely to take some time. So initially we might just get a 1.0-litre ‘Firefly Turbo’ three-cylinder petrol capable of producing 120 PS and 190 Nm.
Fiat’s brilliant game plan
Though Fiat Motors have been around in India for quite sometime they couldn’t penetrate the market as well as they hoped for. Now they are directing all their expertise on to their sister brand- Jeep, which is thus far yielding great results.
Starting with the Jeep Compass, when entering a segment dominated by Toyota, a huge name, brawny looks and a very capable machine are essential. The Compass ticked all these boxes (along with relative affordability) and that shows in the number of sales.
Lower down the segment though , what people need is ‘more for less’ and that’s where the new sub-4m comes in. Above all, getting you hands on a Jeep for under Rs. 10 lakhs will be the most lucrative deal the manufacturer will put forward. Setting Jeep as a premium brand (with eye-watering prices) at its introduction can be seen as the first step of Fiat’s brilliant game plan.
What about the Jeep Renegade?
The Jeep Renegade was seen testing across many parts of India in 2017. Here are some pictures of the mini-SUV when it came to Kerala.
Numerous readers have reported seeing two Jeep Renegades testing, both together and individually, in the state. It is also reported that a Wrangler and Cherokee are with them.
Will Jeep price it affordably?
The Renegade is Jeep’s smallest and most affordable model, and retails for prices lower than the Compass globally. However internationally recognizable models are usually sold at a premium here in India, mostly because of how they are brought to the country. So its very likely the the Renegade could command upwards of 20 lakhs here.
Jeep Renegade India – Early Reports & Specs (18/07/2017)
Fiat has huge plans for the Indian market and will be investing close to $280 million in the country. The company plans to sell ‘India-made’ Jeeps by as soon as 2017 and seeing the Renegade testing is surely a good sign. However, there is no official confirmation on launch of the car in India.
The camouflaged Jeep Renegade could mean either one of two things. Jeep may be readying up for its launch, or they may be testing the ‘Small Wide Platform’ for use in the upcoming C-SUV.
The Jeep C-SUV (as it is commonly called) will be bigger than the Renegade and will also be priced above it (expected). However, being produced at the Ranjangoan plant in India, localisation will ensure affordability.
The new spy shots get us a clearer look of the beefy “All-American” design. Big circular headlamps, vertical 7 slot grille and butch taillamps can be seen. On the inside, the car seems to have premium cloth upholstery, high-resolution 5.0-inch Uconnect touchscreen with AM/FM radio, Aux/USB+, Bluetooth®, climate control system and more.
The Jeep Renegade is powered by an in-line four-cylinder 2.0-litre ‘Fiat-derived’ Multijet2 engine which comes in two state of tunes – 138bhp and 168bhp. Six speed manual and Nine speed automatic transmission options are available.
Stay tuned for more news and updates.
