India-based Mahindra automotive is considering a new electric car brand to rival the likes of Tesla. Though their electric portfolio is limited to some small cars, their expertise in the field cannot to be questioned. The manufacturer has been researching the segment for quite some time now and even has a solid presence in the Formula-E platform. With the Indian government pushing for fossil-fuel-free transport by the end of next decade, a new brand seems to be a very reasonable move.
Surely Mahindra has all the ingredients for creating a good electromotive brand but rivalling the likes of Tesla requires something really special. That is one of the prime reason they brought legendary Italian design house Pininfarina. They have been given task of designing, manufacturing and marketing the car.
Mahindra is also fulfilling a long cherished dream of the Italian brand’s founder, Mr. Battista Farina , by making Pininfarina a OEM or manufacturer.
Mahindra’s new electric brand- Portfolio & what to expect
Report suggests that the brand’s first car will be a sedan and that it is already under development. In the five years following its launch, an SUV and a hatchback/crossover are also expected.
When Mahindra acquired the then debt-laden Pininfarina in 2015, its Chairman and Managing Director said that they were hopeful of building a really high-end, crowd-pleasing Pininfarina electric.
The manufacture is also researching new technologies including fast-charging and better battery packs for use on their new line of cars.
An electric sedan or concept will probably debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March. The new brand’s prime markets will be North America and Western Europe.
There’s no confirmation as to when the car will be made available in India but its likely to happen before the end of this decade.
