Maruti Suzuki Swift 2018 – What’s new?

The Swift is one of the more popular models in Maruti’s arsenal and even after 17 years, India’s obsession with the car hasn’t gone down. Any unnecessary or drastic changes to its design would be like shooting oneself in the leg. So, cosmetic changes on the 2018 version can best be described as evolutionary.

The new Swift is based on the fifth-generation Heartect platform and as the company claims, has better rigidity, strength and NVH levels. The car is wider than before and even though its length has gone down, wheelbase has increased.

Dimension Change
Length -10mm
Width +40mm
Wheelbase +20mm

These are in addition to improved (24mm+) headroom, legroom and boot space (by 58l).

The new Swift has more expressive front fascia with a wide single grille and stubby projector headlights with LED DRL. On its sides, there are new 15″ diamond cut alloy wheels and black colored c-pillar with vertically placed door handle.

The cabin has changed a lot- mostly for the better. Its dashboard is new, the air-con vents are different in shape and the knobs in the center console feel more premium. There’s a new flat-bottom steering wheel as well as a Smartplay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink joining the roster.

Safety features including ABS with EBD, dual airbags, and ISOFIX child seat restraint system comes as standard.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift 2018 will come powered by the same 1.2-litre VVT petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS 190 diesel engines, mated to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AGS automated transmission. We will have to wait a bit more to know if their tuning are different.

The car will have an all-new design, better interior, more features and different engine options, along with addition of mild hybrid technology in some variants. Update 8/12/16: Production version of the upcoming Swift hatchback has been spied for the first time.

The new car gets evolutionary design changes and has become more mature and angular. It gets features like clear lens taillamps, large grille, stubby bonnet and c-pillar mounted rear door handles.

On the inside features like newly designed 3-spoke, multi-function steering wheel, new instrument panel, redesigned dashboard and center console and circular air-con vents are provided. The interior still maintains a predominantly black colour shame.

Swift 2017 cabin featuresSuzuki Swift 2017 India

Globally, the new Suzuki Swift 2017 is likely to come in 3 engine options, including a 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine with the SHVS mild hybrid system, a detuned 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged three-cylinder petrol and a  K12C 1.2-litre DUALJET naturally aspirated unit. Later on, a Swift Sport model will be introduced with 140 PS producing, 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

In India, a home-grown 1.5 liter diesel engine should replace the 1.3 liter, fiat sourced mill on the current model. Further SHVS mild hybrid system is likely to be incorporated on petrol variants to improve mileage.

India being its leading market, the Maruti Suzuki Swift 2017 is likely to come to the country in the first quarter itself. The manufacturer will also launch the 2017 version of their dZire compact sedan next year which has already been spotted on our roads.

Stay tuned.
