Mercedes Benz X Class Pickup Exterior, Interior

Pickup design is something very new to Mercedes, and it is very hard to bring the brand’s signature elegance and class into something that has always stood for brute force. However, we feel that the German manufacturer has somehow pulled it off (eventhough the reactions are mostly mixed), and the new Mercedes X-Class does look good.

The car’s front and sides are CLA-isque and mostly almost identical to its concept but as expected, the tailights have been changed. The car is avaialbe in 3 variants- Pure, Progressive and Power.

The base Pure package is aimed at people looking for the bare minmum from their luxuary pickup, while the mid ‘progressive’ trim gets a more aggressive design and better features. The Power trim comes with all the bells and whistles that you would expect from a top-of-the-line Mercedes car, and as its name suggests, more power.

These new developments are sure to wake up BMW, who are currently in initial stages of developing a similar luxury pickup.

The interior of the X Class is typically Mercedes and gets features like premium dual tone seats, signature circular air-con vents and large floating infotainment system.

Mercedes Benz X Class engine, specs

The Mercedes X-Class, in most markets, come powered by a bunch of diesel engines with the range topping trim getting a V6. These engines will send power to all 4 wheels via a 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system.

Variants & engine

  • Mercedes X 220 d and X 220 d MATIC – 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 163 hp and 403 Nm, 6-speed manual transmission.
  • Mercedes X 250 d and X 250 d 4MATIC- 2.3-litre biturbo four-cylinder 190 hp and 450 Nm of torque, 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic.
  • Mercedes X 350 d 4MATIC- Turbo V6 258 hp and 550 Nm, 7-speed automatic transmission

Strip the car of its body and you realise that it is not 100% German. Infact, as a result of a billion dollar Mercedes and Nissan-Renault partnership, the X-Class is underpinned by the Nissan Navera’s platform. They have a tie-up for production as well.

Mercedes Benz X Class Release date, Price, production

The Mercedes Benz X Class will start production for Europe, Australia and South Africa markets at Nissan’s Barcelona plant later this year, while that for Latin American markets will happen in 2018 at Renault’s Cordoba plant in Argentina. The car will not come to India.

Mercedes is still unsure about releasing the car in United States, eventhough it is one of the largest markets for Pickup trucks. This is because the X-Class falls in to the mid-size category, where sales are lower. The cost incurred for production will be too high and unless success is 100% gurenteed, Mercedes won’t take the risk.
