Last year, Gurugram-based Electric two-wheeler maker ‘Okinawa’ expressed their intent to make an electric motorcycle. They had a promising start with electric scooters and were thus keen on expanding to other segments as well.
Okinawa’s first electric bike is likely to be called ‘Oki100’ – named after the bike they showcased in 2018, but with an entirely different design and specs.
Okinawa Oki100 specs, battery and range
The Oki100 will have a detachable Li-ion battery like its cousin the ‘Okinawa Praise’. No details on its motor is available yet but expect it to be adequtely powerful.
|Top speed||100 kmph|
The electric bike should feature full LED-lighting, Digital instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity, OTA updates and more. These have now become mainstream in all electric vehicles, so much so that, ‘Revolt’ is using remote monitoring to switch-off bikes of payment defaulters.
Okinawa Oki100 Design- A commuter?
As I said, the Oki100 will not look anything like the motorcycle they showcased at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, and that’s good. No one really asked for a hideous Ducati Monster monkey bike in the first place. Secondly, there’s a huge opportunity in India’s electric commuter bike market as most of the ones in development are either sportbikes or surprisingly, superbikes!
If Okinawa can bring out a proper commuter bike with 150 Kms of range, that’s possibly what their ‘target’ urban middle-class customers are looking for in the first place. It could even take a huge chunk out of Hero’s customers as well.
Okinawa electric bike- when will it launch?
Okinawa had earlier set their sights on the first half of 2020 to launch their motrcycle. However, because of the COVID-19 situation all their operations have been suspended till May. They are waiting for the Government’s orders to restart. Thus the bike might be delayed till the latter half of this year or early 2021.
