With the Etios ageing and sales not well enough, Toyota is likely to replace it with the Yaris Aktiv in India. The car is yet to be spotted on our roads but its sibling, the Vios has been spotted extensively since 2015. The Yaris will go up against cars like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Honda city in the C-segment.
|Price in India||Rs. 7.65 lakhs|
|Engine options||Petrol & Diesel|
|Debut||Auto Expo , 2018|
Why Yaris not Vios?
Both the Yaris and Vios share the same B-platform and it is likely that the latter was used to test compatibility with Etios’ 1.4-litre diesel engine. Though this platform-engine combination is completely new, the Etios’s 1.5-litre petrol engine has been used with it elsewhere.
But why not the Vios? Toyota is yet to truly penetrate India’s sub-10 lakh segment. With the portfolio they have, strong contenders in the premium hatchback and compact sedan/c-segment sedan space is the best way to achieve this. Since the Yaris Aktiv has a hatchback version in the Yaris, it gets preference over the Vios. Both the Yaris and Yaris Aktiv share similar design and interior, with the obvious exception of boot. This makes it a very economical choice for Toyota.
Toyota might not completely replace the Etios with Vios and the successful fleet/commercial segment might be spared. There will be enough price deference between the two cars for them to co-exist.
Toyota Yaris Aktiv engine and transmission
The Yaris Aktiv will likely launch the Yaris Aktiv in two engine options-1.4L diesel and 1.5L petrol. These are the same units doing duty on the Etios but could be tuned different. Both manual and automatic transmission options are likely to be provided.
Toyota Yaris Aktiv price and launch in India
The Maruti Ciaz is priced starting from Rs. Rs 7.76 lakh so we can expect something very similar for the Yaris Aktiv. It will should debut at the 2018 Auto Expo, Delhi.
