2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – ‘Drag Beast’ from Hell

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 2018

The much awaited Dodge Challenger SRT Demon has been revealed completely just hours before the New York Motor show press day kick-off. Before you ask, the new Demon produces ‘just’ 840 horsepower and not 1050 bhp as was widely rumoured. However, we can safely say that the Challenger Demon is everything we’d hoped for, and perhaps even more.

In a series of new videos, Dodge has claimed that they have begun a whole new direction of ‘production’ muscle cars with the SRT demon. The segment has become increasingly gentlemanly in recent years to be within tedious regulations so many so that modern muscle cars are not much different from sports cars. With the demon however, the engineers were given full freedom to go all out, and that shows in the final result.

On the side not, though the car has set a new record for the fastest production car in quarter mile, it is banned by National Hot Rod Association for being fast enough not to ride without additional safety equipment (roll cage and racing harness) on the track.

Exterior

As with any ‘proper’ wide body customisation, the SRT Demon looks menacing. Its front fascia remains mostly unchanged but the air scoop on its hood is bigger. Also, halo headlights now feature two air intakes instead of one.

On its sides, the wheels arches are wider and an exclusive demon logo is provided.

Interior

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon cabin

Cabin is visually similar to the Challenger SRT but a number of weight reducing measures have been adopted. Apart from using aluminium extensively (on pistons, calipers, wheels, lug nuts etc), the car also gets smaller, hollow sway bars and tilt/telescopic steering to keep its weight down. Some equipment have been removed too, these include

  • Front passenger seat and belt
  • Rear seat, restraints and floor mats
  • 16 speakers and associated sound equipment
  • Trunk deck cover trim, carpeting, spare tire cover
  • Mastic, body deadeners, insulators and foam
  • Park sensors and module

However, most of these, along with Harman Kardon 19-speaker, 900-watt audio system, sunroof, heated seats and steering etc are available as optional equipment.

Power for the demon comes from a 6.2-liter Hemi V8 equipped with a 2.7-liter supercharger (with 14.5 psi boost) producing 840 horsepower and 770 pound-feet of torque. The car has three hp ratings which can be changed by using 2 keys – black & red, and the type of fuel. The black key enables 500 hp while the red key takes the car all the way up to 804 hp. The entire 840 hp can be harnessed by using 100+ octane race gas which is achieved by use of a duel fuel pump and a very cleaver ECU.

The car come with different drive models as well, including drag, street and even a password protected Valet mode. The latter limits horse power, and engine speed to 4,000 rpm, and disables the shift paddles and launch control.

For drag enthusiast, Dodge is offering optional performance parts too.

The Dodge Challenger SRT has some firsts for a production car, these include:

  • First to enable use of 100+ octane race gas
  • First production car to be equipped with transbrake – Locks transmission and prevents need for standing on the brakes prior to green light
  • First to use liquid-to-air intercooler chiller system
  • First to use Drag Mode suspension setup
  • First street-legal produtuion car hat can lift its front wheels off the ground under hard acceleration
