Volkswagen Atlas 7-seater SUV has been unveiled for the United States market. It is the largest VW currently in production and will compete with likes of the Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango. The car was earlier spotted in china, where it sells under the Teramont name.
Here are more details of the car:
Volkswagen Atlas exterior and interior
The new Atlas comes with a no nonsense design, and is boxy in appearance. While it may not be as exciting as the new Skoda Kodiaq which is also based on the MQB platform, the car’s sheer presence cannot be neglected. It dwarfs the more expensive Touareg in dimension- measuring 5,037mm in length, 1,979mm in width and 1,768mm in height.
The Atlas’s imposing front fascia consists of large rectangular headlamp and foglamp, signature VW flat grille, LED DRLs and a large air dam. The sides get a single character line and its roof slightly slants on to the intimidating rear.
The car’s cabin sees no change from the leaked spy images and is as Volkswagen as can be. It looks premium and gets large touchscreen infotainment system, optional digital display behind the multi-function steering wheel and large air-con vents, in tune with overall proportion of the car. Ample space is also available inside and Volkswagen promises comfortable seating for 7 people.
Some of the features of the car include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and segment first post-collision braking system (that prevents secondary impact after collision).
Volkswagen Atlas engine, MPG and transmission
Powering the VW Atlas is a 238PS 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI engine (not available initially) and a 3.6-litre VR6 mill that is good for 280PS. Fresh out of the diesel gate, no diesel variant are made available for this model in USA.
Its engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox sending power to the rear wheels. Optional 4Motion all-wheel drive is provided on the V6 variant.

Volkswagen Atlas launch and price in India
The VW Atlas is primarily intended for United States market and there are no hints from the manufacturer’s part on launch of the carin India. That said, it has everything in its arsenal to be a fitting competition for the Toyota Fortuner (2017 variant incoming) except for a diesel motor. This can however be easily rectified by equipping the car with their staple 2.0-litre TDI unit, that will also be seen on the upcoming Passat.
The Atlas’s large proportions, ample space and people carrying capacity is sure to go well with potential Indian customers on launch.
Expected price- Rs. 29 lakhs
